Technical Details for STEVENSON Paints

We use high quality pigments in the manufacture of our Stevenson paints: acrylic, oils and watercolours. They are full strength and permanent (light-fast). All pigments are genuine with no fillers or extenders. Refer to our online Colour charts. Printed charts with the actual paint colours are available upon request, using our Contact Us form

The Hegman Gauge is an instrument that measures the particle size of pigments in a paint paste - usually in microns.

Pigment information

Contrary to popular belief, no manufacturer of artists’ paints manufactures the pigments used in those paints. There are many large chemical houses specializing in pigments. Although none make pigments specifically for artists’ use, each offers a wide selection that are suitable. They must be resistant to fading (light-fast), non-bleeding and have desirable mixing qualities.

Only those pigments proven to be suitable for professional-quality art works have been chosen by Stevensons. The pigments used in the manufacture of our paints are, in most cases, indicated by the name of the colour. Some exceptions follow:

The index name and number of the pigment(s) are listed on the paint containers, along with permanency ratings. We do not do any independent testing of our pigments, however, the permanency ratings we use have been determined by reputable pigment manufacturers. Refer to the Pigment composition lists for all Stevenson paints (see above, right hand column).

Please refer to the individual pigment composition list for each of our Stevenson paints: acrylics, oil paints, oil slicks and water colour paints.

These lists are available for viewing and download in PDF format.*

Note: all of our paints are rated Non-Toxic when used as intended and are not subject to WHIMIS control. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), pigment composition lists and our own printed colour charts (with actual paint colours) are available on request.
